Morning Boat Ride

2006 August 7, Monday · Savanna, Illinois

MORE +

Going for a ride on the Missippi is one of my favorite things to do in Savanna. There are a lot of different areas to visit. Grandma and Grandpa used to have a trailer up at the Army Depot (which was closed at the time), and there were many different backwaters and sloughs to visit in that area. It was so beautiful.

I thought C would enjoy On this trip, we just went down to Sebula and looked at the grain elevator and the tug boats and the big old bridge, and then C fell asleep. So we turned around and toured the more naturey areas below the Palisades Park. It’s really beautiful.

C on the river

C didn’t especially like it when the boat was actually driving. He hates it when the wind blows his hat off, and he doesn’t like loud machinery.

C liked the railroad bridge

This is the railroad bridge near Sebula. The entire last section of the bridge rotates on that platform to let the large boats through. Dad says it’s 100 years old!

C said to me “When the motor gets too loud, it makes C want to sleep.”

That thing behind him is just one big gear that rotates the whole bridge. Wow!

It’s sort of an inside joke — maybe Lauren will share this joke someday.

Frayed Knot!

2006 August 7 · 10:55AM · Monday

“Frayed Knot” is actually one of my favorite jokes! You know, the piece of rope walks in a bar and the bartender throws him out and says “We don’t serve your kind here”, so the rope goes out back and tussles his hair and does some yoga and goes back in and the bartender goes “Hey aren’t you that rope?” and the rope goes “No, I’m a frayed knot!”

wind-swept Arianna

I love how Ari’s striking a pose in the front of the boat, hair and clothes blown and billowing in the wind. So cute!
