Hat Experiment

2010 January - February · Hallings gate, Oslo, Norway

This was the first hat I attempted with the new yarn to match Apl’s new jacket. This took almost exactly half of the skein. I made a disk, basically, with short-rowed equilateral triangles and then gathered it with a twisted cord to make a ruffly little bonnet-type hat. It doesn’t stay on very well, though :(

This must be the fourth or fifth time that I’ve bought a yarn with short color changes, thinking they looked so beautiful on the ball, and then not liking it when it’s knit up. It just ends up looking so muddled… like clown camo. I thought I would try using garter stitch, arranged vertically around the hat to give it a different kind of look.

I tried a straight short-rowed triangle, but thought it looked unbalanced. So I tried making a triangle like this: start with the long side, using decreasing short rows until the center of the triangle, then using increasing short rows to pick back up the other stitches all the way to the top of the traingle.

The triangles at the back of the hat were slightly longer, I hoped this would cover the ears/neck better.

I thought it might turn out more hat-shaped, but it was definitely disky, with only slight coning action at the center. I guess I could have spread out the short rows in a different distribution along the edge of the traingle, instead of evenly along it.

I put in a twisted cord a couple inches from the edge to cinch it up, and used that as a tie as well. It was pretty cute, but didn’t stay on so well, and was super easy for a grumpy baby to pull off.

This was after she was trying to pull it off, messing up the ruffling.
