Late Winter Walk to the Graveyard

We went to check out a new cafe nearby, that reportedly had a crafty lean to it. Indeed, they had sewing machines that you could rent the use of by the hour (like and internet cafe, but for sewing!) and sewing classes and such. The children really need to practice their “cafe behavior”, though. It’s a good thing we were very early and the only ones there. After that we visited the graveyard and Chris played with his camera a bit. I was actually get some knitting done while we were out, also. Nice!

Ruby and C exploring frozen water

2008 March 2 · 12:18PM · Sunday

These little ponds flow one into the other all the way down this hill. Normally all the public fountains are drained during the winter, but I think this one collects rain water somehow. It was actually iced over in the shadey areas, so the children had fun throwing rocks onto the ice and breaking it with sticks and stuff. Fun!

C loves breaking ice!

This is not something we get to do very often, so C was pretty excited about it.

Unused gravestones

2008 March 2 · 1:02PM · Sunday

So the thing about graveyards here in Europe that most people don’t understand is that you don’t buy a plot, you rent it. It’s a long-term lease, like 40 years or something. But if nobody pays the rent after that, they rent the space to someone else. These are the gravestones that have been removed to make space for new ones.

That’s horrible. Where do the bodies go? I suppose since no one is paying the rent, the plots are so old that maybe no one is alive to care.
