May Mittens

The May chapter in Knitter’s Almanac included two mitten patterns, and I knit them both. These are the Norwegian mittens, with the suggested motifs. I enjoyed knitting these, but only after I switched to two circular needles instead of 4 double-pointeds. I feel like DPNs always slow me down at the end of each needle, especially doing colorwork with a strand in each hand. With two circs, you have to readjust ½ as often.

The pattern went along swimmingly, until I tried them on, right before I was going to take out the provisional stitches on the 2nd mitten to make the thumb. I dicovered I’d make two right-hand mittens. Yikes! Plan is to make two lefts sometime in the future. I will not frog.

I liked the simple traditional curls and snowflakes that EZ suggested. The cuffs are extra big and huge, designed to go over your coat’s sleeves.

The yellow stitches are holding the thumb stitches until I take them out and pick up the live stitches to knit the thumb. It was not until I was almost ready to do this that I realized I’d knitted two right mittens. Dash it all!
