Postcards from Germany

1905 August 3-4 · Germany, Europe

MORE +

I found these postcards among Wilhelmina’s things. It’s hard to tell if she sent these cards (and they were later put with Wil’s things by the recipient) or if she recieved them. The writing is in German, in a germanic script. It’s also very hard for me to read!

Postcard from Erfurt

1905 August 3, Thursday

Erfurt is a city in Germany. “Villen an der Pfloerthcnebruecke” means “Houses along the Wicket Bridge”. I googled and couldn’t find anything called that in Erfurt, so, who knows… Anyway, Here’s what I can read of the text: along the top “Hertzlichen Gruess … Gruess von …”. Then on the bottom: “Liebn L(?) …” can’t read the rest of the top line, then “zu kommen und bei mir …” and then I can’t read anything of the next two lines. Basically, the bits translated say “Kind greetings… greetings from …” then “Dear L… ” “(something) to come and by me…” Not much!

Postcard from Swinemuende

1905 August 4, Friday

I had an interesting dilema when choosing the “place” category for this picture. When this postcard was sent, it was a German city in the province of Pomerania. After WWII, it was annexed into Poland, though. There is a note faintly written on it that says “this is were we (?)”, I assume “were” should be “where”, and the last word looks maybe like “mett”. So, maybe “this is where we met” but I don’t know who! It was with Wilhelmina’s things.

wow… I really like the postcards! In fact, I can’t get enough.

Ok, enough playing with your comment system (which I really like!)

I have no clue what the rest of the words are on the postcard. It’s that crazy old handwriting that I can barely decipher in English.

Have you asked someone from the 1930’s generation? They might be able to read the script better… Perhaps Frau Wuttig?… :)

Reverse of Erfurt postcard

1905 August 4, Friday

This is the back of the postcard from Erfurt. Post mark is from Erfurt, with a very nice “Deutches Reich” stamp. I think it reads “Frau Lautfor Koch p. (?) (?) Kuehn, Huffen bei (?)mindefeld” Huffen is a town in the North Rhine – Westfalia area of Germany. I looked at Google Earth, and it actually just looks like a bend in the river with some farms around it!
