The Winter Festival

2006 January 28, Saturday · Hallings gate, Oslo, Norway

MORE +

This weekend we went out to the Winter Festival downtown. We weren’t sure exactly what it would be like, as all the information was in Norwegian. It was at the open-air skating rink and there was a little children’s cross-country ski track, and sled obstacle course and lots of booths and vendors for things like skis and ski lodges. We mostly just walked around and looked at the different things. C was the most excited about getting a big red balloon.

C, downtown

2006 January 28 · 11:42AM · Saturday · Oslo, Norway

We just got off the bus and are walking over to the street where the Winter Festival is. C took off his mittens on the bus and didn’t want to put them back on, so I clipped them to his coat.

C, downtown

2006 January 28 · 11:42AM · Saturday · Oslo, Norway

I was just going through the old Blogger blog that we used when we first moved to Norway and we were trying to re-write pine.fm (2nd? 3rd? of many iterations). I was comparing my old comments on the same pictures here and there, and this is what I said about this picture on blogger: “He insisted on putting his hands in his pockets instead of mittens, so I pinned them to his jacket.” Funny the little crumbs of information we leave… I never would have remembered that detail. Important? Maybe not. Nostalgic, yes.

A nice view of Chris’s new haircut. [While typing that, I accidentally typed “haircute” — Freudian typo?] I think it looks rather nice.

Ruby in a bonnet

2006 January 28 · 12:12PM · Saturday · Oslo, Norway

We stopped in Deli de Luca (a local store… kind of convenience store + deli) to get a bite to eat before heading over to the festival. Ruby looked so cute in her hat I couldn’t help take a picture. I think I know why I like this hat so much — because I used to wear bonnets, too!

C and his balloon

2006 January 28 · 1:05PM · Saturday · Oslo, Norway

I love this picture of C. I see him like this a lot — whenever we go out he wears his warm coat and all you can see is his cute little face poking out. He looks so happy to have his balloon, too.

I don’t know what happened to my regular hat, so I’m wearing my wacky hat again.

Sad, sad C

2006 January 28 · 1:12PM · Saturday · Oslo, Norway

C pulled the balloon off the stick and then a little bit later dropped it on the pavement. Very sadly the cold ground caused the balloon to contract in such a way that it popped, scaring the living daylights out of C, me, and a few passers-by. C was also really sad and disappointed that his balloon broke.

Chris and C pay last respects to the balloon

2006 January 28 · 1:12PM · Saturday · Oslo, Norway

Chris and C lay the balloon in its final resting place, the trash can. C was sad about it, but this offered him some closure. After this picture was taken we continued up this street and saw a couple of good street musicians which cheered C up a bit. He likes street musicians.
