Page 10 of Violet’s Album

There are a few different car pictures on this page, and one of Aunt Tess saying it looks like she is hitching a ride. Pretty funny. The one of Aunt Tess was missing, but I think I can figure which one it is.

Young Tess, dressed up

1920 · Chicago, Illinois

This may or may not be the missing picture from page 10 of Violet’s album. It seems like it could be; it’s the proper orientation/size, and it’s a picture of Tess… though I don’t really see how she might look like she’s “hitching a ride”. Maybe it was something particular to that era.

1920 - 1929

Not sure about the dates of any of these, really. Must be the 20’s some time. The missing picture is labelled “To the left: Tessie; it looks like she is hitching a ride”. I think I found the picture Violet was referring to.

Violet, some Crandalls, and others

1920 - 1929

Violet wrote: “Above, to the left: Clare, Therese, Myself, Pearl, William Owen and Freeman.” Clare, Pearl and Freeman (yes, Clare is a boy) are Crandalls, neighbors and family friends of Violet. I don’t know anything about William Owen, though. I found a William A. Owen living a few blocks from the Pompocos in Oak Park, son of William A. and Myrtle, maybe that’s him. (Thank you Ancestry.com!) Therese is still a mystery, though.

Also, Freeman is holding an old-timey box of Cracker Jack, cool!

Mystery

1920 - 1929

Violet left us absolutely no clues about these people — and I have no idea why there is an X on the leftmost girls. These people don’t look like Violet or any of her family; it also doesn’t look like the Crandalls, who were family friends. I didn’t check the back for writing. Wish I had, now!

Violet, playing the mandolin

1923

I guessed at the date — Violet seems to have cut her hair around 1923, so I thought that seemed like a good guess. She wrote “To the left: Myself, trying to play Harold’s mandolin”. May or may not be Harold of Aunt-Tess-and-Uncle-Harold.
