Mom picked up a cone from this tree, and wanted to be able to identify the tree later. Here you go, mom!
That looks like a Magnolia grandiflora — a Southern magnolia — native to the US southeast. They’re wonderful trees, especially if you let them get big.

Apl’s Adorable Coat
2009 December 29 · 7:59PM · Tuesday
This was a present from Grandma Wendy this year, and boy am I ever glad we brought it; it was cold! This coat got massive amounts of attention. Everyone, and I only mean that slightly hyperbolistically, loved it and commented on it. Now, seriously, without exaggerating, five people stopped us in the grocery store to compliment the coat. Five strangers. Next time you are at the grocery store imagine five of those random people stopping you to tell you the same thing. You’d get the message: the coat is totally adorbable! (Oh, and the baby.)
Thanks, Grandma Wendy!
Hyperbolically?
Oh, yeah, that’s the real word, isn’t it?

This was our first full day in Sacramento. Mom had picked me up in San Francisco the day before and we drove (through rush hour!) and got into Sacramento late. I hadn’t bothered to bring the hotel address or anything (ha!) so that was fun. We finally found it, got some of the best french fries ever from room service and collapsed into bed.
The next day we did all my errands: post office, knitting store, grocery shopping. It was a fun and low-key day, and super great to spend it with my mom and her most adorable grandbaby ever. (For the record, whichever grandbaby is present is the most adorable.)
