Ruby’s Shrug — April 3, 2012 at 6 pm |
Ruby needed a shrug to compliment her many sleeveless dresses. I whipped this up out of almost exactly 2 balls of Sublime Soya Cotton yarn. I really liked the yarn, it was smooth and soft. I used the Pomatomus pattern as inspiration. She loves it!

Wendy got me three balls of this yarn for Christmas two years ago and I’ve been working on this shawl in fits and starts since then. At first the garter stitch center was the perfect knit to bring to stitch-n-bitch, but that meant I only worked on it for about 3 hours per week. I powered through the lace border and then came the knit-on edge … wow, that took a long time. Just 8 rows of 13 stitches (approximately), but allllll the way around the edge … that was a lot of stitches. Ultimately I think the result is very nice! The colors really go together very well. I was skeptical when I got to the lace edge whether or not I would like the color change around the edge, but now I really do like it.

Asymmetrical Stripe Triangle — April 24, 2012 |
I made this back in Oslo when I was trying to pare down the stash before the move. I gave away a lot of the scarves/small projects that I made during that time, but I really liked this one and I thought there might be a design idea in there somewhere. Not that I have time to fool around with designing. The idea was planted when I made my Baktus scarf, I loved how the stripes ran vertically and almost diagonally. I’ve also loved the striking combination of vibrant color-changing yarns and neutral yarns that I’ve seen here and there.

Two Hearts — Jan 8, 2012 at 12:36 pm |
I went to a baby shower/ blessingway for an old friend here in Portland, and this is the vest I made for her. It’s the Milo vest, with the heart cable variation. I actually only did two hearts with some trailing cables like balloon strings, to symbolize the strong mama-baby bond. This was a super fast knit, started it literally the day before the shower. The yarn is a silk-wool blend that I bought more than 10 years ago in Baltimore. I toyed with it in a couple of other projects, but it never quite worked; then I used it as the binding yarn at C’s blessingway (you sit everyone in a big circle and pass the yarn around, and have everyone loop it around their wrists, then when the circle is complete everyone breaks the yarn and makes bracelets to wear until the baby is born.). It seemed fitting to use this yarn from my first baby’s blessingway to knit something for my friend’s first baby.

Aunt Thelma’s Bonnet — Nov 16, 2011 at 1:14 pm |
This hat was one of the many knitted christmas presents that Aunt Thelma sent us over the years. I’m pretty sure she sent it to my mom first (which is a huge joke if you know my mom and hats…) then I inherited it when I was visiting Alaska and needed cold-weather gear, and now Ruby has inherited it as an over-the-helmet headwarming device. Thanks Aunt Thelma, we’ve put it to good use! I only hope that some of my knitted items are still being enjoyed in 30 years …

Shades of Blue — Nov 6, 2011 at 1:22 pm |
This was one of the series of scarves that I knit for the staff at Treklang. It was a nice way to say thank you to them (at least I thought so!) for taking care of three of our kids, and a great way for me to clean out the stash a bit before our move. This was the Little Arrowhead Shawl by Pam Allen.

Knitting! — Jun 2, 2011 at 1:55 pm |

These are the needles and yarn Ruby got in Paris; she doesn’t knit often, as you can see, she’s only got three or so rows here. But sometimes the urge hits her and she gets a few stitches in.

Klein Bottle Hat — May 16, 2011 at 10 am |
I knit a Klein Bottle! I made the handle longer than the original and increased more gradually into the body. The finished piece had a double layer around the head, so it’s super warm. It’s pretty maleable, too, if you pull the handle more in or out of the hole, you can have a shorter or longer hat; you can also wear the handle in the back, side, or front for different stylish effect.
