Queen Frostine — December 25-27, 2009

After I took up the challenge of my first lace shawl for Missy’s wedding, I felt like lace for weddings was a nice tradition. So when (some time later) Aly is getting married, I decided to continue the tradition. I even used the exact same yarn!

Yarn Yarn Yarn! — Dec 18, 2009 at 7:52 pm

It’s Jojoland Harmony, which is so beautiful! I had just learned about this brand of yarn from one of my favorite knitbloggers so it was a pleasant surprise to open up my package and see the three gorgeous skeins, complete with a ziggy-zaggy shawl pattern. I have cast on, and knit up just enough to satisfy my curiosity before turning back to other projects that have been promised to various important people. But I look forward to getting back to it!

Hot Pants — December 13, 2009 at 11 am

Ok, these are “hot” in the sense that they will keep little legs warm, and that they are hot pink, not in the B-52s sense of the phrase.

I knit the September longies from The Knitter’s Almanac for Ruby a) because she needed wool pants for recess at school and b) I did not want to admit how much yarn it would actually take to swath my post-3rd-baby behind in wool.

The yarn was a birthday gift from my Wendy, bought during our family vacation this summer in Stavanger. There was a charming little store called Bånsull close off the main square by the cathedral.

Most Boring Knit Ever — December 24, 2007

It’s a cable cozy for a camera remote shutter thing.

Korkenisse in the Snow — December 15, 2009 at 2 pm

These were the cork elves (“korkenisse”) that never made it to the Christmas market. The children told me that “real” nisser are either red or dark blue, so the light blue ones and the white one couldn’t go to the market. The rainbow one was knit on a special request from C.

Stars — November-December, 2009

August in The Knitter’s Almanac is devoted to Christmas “fiddle faddle”, and is probably the most enjoyably written chapter. It’s like the original knitting blog, pre-internet. Aside from my general affection for this chapter and the endearing story of two old people tooling around in the wilderness in a canoe, I was not won over by the patterns. My tree turned out bloated and floppy (I won’t even burden you with a picture of it), and I didn’t even try the angel as it looked really too old-fashioned for my tastes. The stars, however, won me over.

Korkenisse Congress — Nov 14, 2009 at 2:32 pm

These korkenisser (“cork elves”) were my contribution to Julemesse (“Christmas Fair”) at the kids’ schools. It took about 25 minutes to make each one, using leftover yarn and “economy” corks we decided not to use for bottling anymore. Each little one has a smiley face, but it’s hard to tell in this picture. I ended up knitting about 40 of them.

Aurora Clapotis — Aug 27, 2009 at 4:14 pm

I absolutely love this colorway. It is reminiscent of the aurora borealis, and the bias construction of the Clapotis further suggests the slanting, undulating nature of the aurora. I’ve wanted to knit the Clapotis for a long time, and finally found inspiration in the Noro Silk Garden sock weight that I found at my mom’s LYS. I knit a mini version, increasing to only about 40 stitches. One skein made a scarf about 11“ wide, and 5’ long (25x150cm). Originally intended as a gift, I’m not sure I’ll be able to give it away!

Kids in Hats — Sep 5, 2009 at 4:14 pm

Again, hats from The Knitter’s Almanac. I think I had not previously photographed the little blue and white Maltese Fisherman’s Hat.

Purple Surprise — August 29, 2009 at 6 pm

“Purple Surprise”… sounds a little like a jello dessert :). This is my fourth Baby Surprise Jacket! I knit it for cousin Zach’s new baby, Emily. Modelled by our own Apl Ina.
