with Elizabeth Pom, Thelma, Jean, Violet, and Carl
The 1930 census found Carl and Violet Scherman living
in St. Louis 4646 Alexander Avenue with their two young
children, Jean (spelled incorrectly!) and Thelma, and Violet’s mother and brother.
They own their home, worth $5,200, and they own a
radio. Carl is 30 and Violet is 21, she was 17 when they
got married. They were both born in Illinois, but
Carl’s parents are from Michigan (I think Carl is misinformed about this — Martin himself reported his own birthplace as Germany and Illinois, in different cesuses) and Germany while
Violet’s parents are from Switzerland and Germany (Bingen).
Carl is a plumber. Violet’s brother, Earl James, age 15,
is a postal messenger boy. Grandma assures me that her grandmother and Uncle Earl (“Bud”) were just visiting.
