Katy’s Scrapbook from Germany — Oct 1997 - Aug 1998 |
I studied abroad in Germany during my junior year. I had a great time and travelled all over during the semester break with my awesome friend Sally. I made this scrapbook when I came home.

I carved my name plate out of a little piece of chokecherry wood I had from home.

That green scarf was from Istanbul, and I stuck up coins and train tickets from all my trips.

Oops, looks like I lost a picture there, somewhere along the way. I think it was with Herr Rudolph.

Christmas 97! — December, 1997 |
I spent Christmas by myself … except for Tarik upstairs who I talked to briefly. It wasn’t as bad as anticipated. Just another day, but no shops open. Yes, I put ribbons around potatoes. I don’t remember why now. My friend Amy sent me a ton of junk food, evidenced on the right.

Paris for New Year’s! — January, 1998 |
I went to Paris with Brent for New Year’s. It was his idea, I wasn’t super-stoked about it. Boy was I wrong! Best! City! Evar!

Grand Tour! — March, 1998 |
I took the picture of the toothbrushes because it encapsuled our packing styles: I had everything miniature, Sally just took regular (we were planning on being gone for two months afterall). The bottom picture is everything I brought back. Mostly, everything I took, plus a bit more.

Yes, we had Jesus watching over us in Rome.

our room in the lovely port of Brindisi — April, 1998 |
We didn’t make it from the train station to the dock on time, so we missed the ferry to Greece. Therefore, we had to spend the night in Brindisi and ended up in a room with this lovely ancient TV.

in lovely sleepy Crete — April, 1998 |
We took a vacation from our vacation in Crete. We picked a city on the map and just went there. It was a lovely sleepy resort town (off season) but still plenty warm. We bought a grocery bag overflowing with oranges for like 1$ and spent the hottest hours of the days holed up in the hotel room with the shutters shut.

back on mainland Greece, trying to get to Istanbul — April, 1998 |
We ended up at this “small student-run hostel” which actually meant just the spare bedroom in this guy’s apartment. The shower was broken in our area of the apartment, so Sally had to shower in a bucket in his kitchen. Though he was a massage student, and offered to give us free massages! We didn’t take him up on it.

seeing the sights in Budpest — April, 1998 |

Lower left: our 3$ meal. It’s all we had left in the local currency. Actually, we had 6$ but we wanted to go to a movie, which cost 3$ for two tickets. So we went to the movie and then picked up this meal at a health food store on the way back to the hostel. Rice cakes, nutella, honey, and some kind of health cracker. Also, I had a bottle of some local liquor specialty that we enjoyed with the meal. Memories!

making the home foods — June, 1998 |
But the end of the year we were all getting a little homesick. We would get together and make Mexican food (as best we could, it was challenging finding ingredients!)
