The scheme for decreasing was just to pick up one less stitch per entrelac row. (If you aren’t familiar with entrelac, each square is made by picking up along the edge of the square below it, usually the same number of stitches, and then knit the last stitch of every-other row with stitches of the square next to it. Wow, that wasn’t clear at all. Sorry.)
I cast on more stitches, and found I needed some extra rows of squares/diamonds, since my yarn was skinnier than the pattern called for. And by the time I got the the 2-stitch diamonds at the center of the tam, I could tell it was not going to draw together neatly. So I knit a few more rows flat and then k2tog for a more reasonable number of stitches to draw together. There is some puckering, just a bit.

Kauni yarns are so beautiful!
With the bit of Kauni left over from my long-lost sweater I knit this tam. Kauni’s longish color changes are perfect for entrelac, in my opinion. Though I did have to tweak it once or twice, taking out some extra so that squares sharing sides weren’t the same color. This is one of my favorite things I’ve ever knit!
