Seaweed Cardigan

2010 March - April · Europe

MORE +

This is definitely my favorite project/finished object of the last little while. My other big wool cardigan was getting to be way too much, even for the tiny amount of Spring that was in the air in Oslo. I decided I needed a toned-down cardi and was loving the short-sleeved versions I’ve been seeing here and there. And along come Interweave Knits Spring 2010 with this lovely little gem. It was a relatively quick knit (in the life of a busy lady), with just enough detail to keep it interesting but not too much that I couldn’t watch a movie. And, the yarn was rescued from a not-perfect-for-it project and I think it suits this one very well, though the color takes away from the seaweediness of the original.

one skein’s worth

The yarn was Cascade 220, bought with my dear friend Sally at Rumpelstiltskin in Sacramento. It was intended for another purpose, but the intended project needed a more subtle color and bulkier yarn. So I was glad to rescue it for this project. That’s one skein, about 220 yards, it got me almost 12 inches!

Wobbly tried to help, too

Wobbly does this all the time. She’s so nosy! If I’m knitting something relatively small like a hat, she’ll just stick her head straight through it.

and done!

I have yet to decide on a fastening method. In the magazine, she uses a skinny belt, but I don’t think that would work on me. Mostly I was wearing Apl in the new soft baby carrier which wraps around the waist, and that worked to keep the cardigan closed. :)

So, confession time. I actually fudged the pattern and didn’t realize it until it was too late. I thought it looked ok, so I just kept going with it, and I don’t think one can really tell. There are rows of straight stitch between the pattern rows and I just skipped those. I think the original in the magazine looks more elongated and elegant. But I also think that’s mostly only if you know what to look for.

I truly love this sweater, and it was the perfect amount of warmth for springtime. I also bought those shoes to match, and I love them!
