Bergen, and the Trip to Stavanger

2009 August 4, Tuesday · Norway, Europe

MORE +

Our second day in Bergen was also a lot of fun. We saw some more of the Bryggen world heritage site, visited a cathedral, the fortress and the king’s hall. To squeeze every last bit of fun out of Bergen, we spent our last ½ hour on the silly tourist train. We had perfect timing and made it onto our ferry to Stavanger in time to get good seats. This was a high-speed ferry, so it was very windy up on deck, but we managed to enjoy some of the fjord views and marvel at the industrial equipment out there.

This is a WWI monument, I think that is a mine; it says it was erected in 1921. I’m sure someone (ehem, Johannes) can correct my translation, but it’s something like “Because of the sailor’s moaning and death, we now have peace, security, and bread.” It’s always about the bread with Norwegians.

These graves were all very old, 1850’s or so; there were only 3 or 4 different families present. I assumed the most important church patrons.

It’s not immediately obvious in this picture, but I was seriously freaking out there… somewhere along the line, I’ve developed a good deal of claustrophobia, without being in any small enclosed spaces. This was the first time I’ve gotten to experience the irrational abject terror… hyperventilation, nausea, the works. This was a tiny dank hole of a room, I had to duck to get through the door, and my arms brushed both sides of the doorway. I’m shuddering thinking about it.

2009 August 4 · 1:35PM · Tuesday

A German munitions boat blew up in the harbor, right next to this building and blew the top right off (and destroyed a lot of other buildings, and a large part of the fortress) in 1944. They rebuilt it after the war, so now everything has a slight 50’s flavor to it. At first I thought it was unfortunate that they did that, but then I remembered various cathedrals around that were completed over hundreds of years in the current styles. So you might end up with a cathedral with a gothic spire and a rococo nave.

on the Bergen tourist train

2009 August 4 · 2:37PM · Tuesday

Our first morning out in Bergen, C saw the silly little tourist train/bus thing and really wanted to ride it. I tried putting him off, but the thing drives through downtown like once an hour! I knew it wouldn’t be high on anyone else’s agendas, though… but we ended up having a free hour right at the end of the day. I was happy we could make this happen for him. It was silly, but I think he really enjoyed it.
