Grandma Susie at the Geology museum

2009 June 5, Friday · Botanisk Hage, Oslo, Norway

MORE +

When we visited Hovedøya Mom was wondering about some of the rocks and formations we found. So I thought it would be fun to go back to the natural history museums with her. (Yes, we’ve gone quite often lately!) C was a little less patient with actaully trying to read every exhibit, but we got through most of the local geology section and satisfied Mom’s curiosity before heading up to see the dinosaurs.

strange formations from Karlsbad

2009 June 5 · 12:33PM · Friday

The first few times we came here, I thought this section was about the Carlsbad Caverns, but since I got a chance to actually read the signs thoroughly this time, I found they were really from Karlsbad, Germany!

That strange formation on the upper left is identified as a “Karlsbad Bouquet”. The note says:

Ground water in Karlsbad is very rich in minerals, especially in lime and iron salts. Something put into this water, for example a bouquet or similar, will eventually harden with mineral deposits.

Crazy!

Mom’s teaching all this stuff in elementary now, so she wanted these pictures to give her ideas on expanding her materials.
