May Mitered Mittens

MORE +

My May project from The Knitter’s Alamanac. Ruby and I went to Husfliden and she picked out a substantially thinner yarn than called for, but I think they’ll still be warm and cozy. I really liked the i-cord cast on, which was a new technique for me.

The zigzags are formed by adding stitches (M1) on both sides of the center-back and center-palm stitches, and then decreasing a stitch on both sides of the hand. The stitch count stays the same, but it turns stripes into zigzags.

Yarn is Rauma 3-ply Strikkegarn. A little scratchy, fairly hairy typical wool.

You can see the i-cord cast on edge there nicely. I made a 4-stitch cord, and then it was very easy to pick up one row of the stitches along the length of the cord. It makes a good sturdy edge for tugging on mittens.

This disaster also happened in May.
