Julian and friend in costume

2007

So I remember this one time that Jake got a job playing piano at the local Fairbanks tourist-honkey-tonk bar. He was like 12. He was dressed kind of like this then, too.

⁓ Katy · 2008 Feb 10 · 11:31AM

heheh i’m actually amazed you remember that.

The bar was the palace saloon in alaskaland (now frontier land or WTF) I was actually just goofing off, playing frontier. I had an old tape case that i had had for years (it’s the same one that katy barfed in on our first trip through canada. My chronicles of narnia tapes were in there and they nevr really got the smell of kate bleah out of them. Thanks sis.)

ANYWAY, this same case was with me that day when I was just having a good time walking around alaskaland, blending in with the theme…tourists were loving me.

I got the gumption in me and walked into the palace saloon and basically said ’you need me in your show.’

They didn’t know what to do with me at first, 12 year old kid in costume walks into the saloon….

But I played the piano for them and sang a bit, and they decided i was right.

The thing is, the first and only night I performed, I sang ’tutti frutti’ by little richard, and forgot EVERY WORD.

I ad libbed, to much success.

There was a standing ovation, and Mom took me home and that was that.

this story is much more interesting when I tell it in person. :P

Ah, I love that story. Not the blech story. The Tutti Frutti story. I especially loved you had those frilly sleeve-holder things in your costume (so the piano player can roll up his sleeves and really honky-tonk it up, without his sleeves falling down), but they were actually a woman’s garter belt. :)

a nice coast

2007 · USA

These are a shot of the sea stacks on third beach, off the washington coast. I believe it was late september, so it’s a bit grey. There were flocks of pelicans cruising low and slow over the shallows.

Welcome to the pacific northwest.

If you look closely, you can see an elf.

He’s there, trust me.

I’ve been sitting here for three weeks straight. My eyes are bleeding. I still don’t see it.

Salmon Chunks — Yeah!

2007

So this one…That’s one of my best friends brishan with me in the picture. We had decided that we were going to catch a fish or six this trip, but the season was all wrong and the place we went was ill timed….a fishing derby had come through the week before, we found out and basically annihilated the population.

We had bought these two fillets of salmon as a worst case scenario fallback.

Turns out we needed them.

We actually watched a trout swimming in front of our bait looking bored and apprehensive at the same time. It was that bad.

Brishan tried to stab it with his hunting knife.

He missed.

a liquor luge

2007

That’s a big block of ice, with a gouge in it for the liquor to run through.

⁓ Katy · 2008 Feb 10 · 11:28AM

I keep forgetting to send you money for that vodka you got for me. I’ll remember one of these days :P I do everything electronically, and mom and dad want….PAPER shudder which requires me actually…going somewhere and doing something involving talking meat objects and pressed dead trees with ink on them. The entire process is unsettling.

⁓ Julian · 2008 Feb 11 · 8:58AM

No worries; I’m not charging interest :) Just buy me dinner next time I see you.

⁓ Katy · 2008 May 11 · 10:38AM

I just sent mom 300 bucks for half of Ariannas plane ticket to come visit me….all the paper and people involved…sheesh…I was like…what’s your account number I’ll just tranfer it…she’s like P.O. box…

sigh
