C sent this picture to his pen pal (a boy in Grandma Susie’s class) of his favorite lunch: brie on bread with pickled beets.

Frankenknits — Mar 4, 2010 at 9:34 am

I made a new pair of warm pants from the sleeves of this old cardigan. Grandma Susie bought it in the 80’s and I inherited it when we were living with them in 2002. It’s been floating back and forth in my wardrobe, barley used, until it got slightly moth eaten and became never used. I patched up the holes with some embroidery and creative darning, and they fit perfectly! Now, what to do with the rest of the sweater?

Theater Debut — March 4, 2010

The spring Suttung performance came off without a hitch. They performed Fyrtøyet a fairy tale about a magic lamp. C (along with Alf-Eivind and Airi Luise) was a magic guard dog, and Ruby was the princess.

Winter Outing — March 6, 2010

We went to the yearly meeting of the Norwegian homeschooling association, it was at the folk museum. It was a cold but lovely day. The kids had a lot of fun meeting all the other homeschoolers (about 10 kids were there). We learned that there are about 150 children are registered with the government as being homeschooled, and there are 27 families in the association over all of Norway. Coincidentally, one of those families lives across the street from us! And they’re awesome!

Apl Using A Spoon — March 9, 2010 at 6 am

Apl was holding her arm up the whole time she was eating her cheerios. She’s getting pretty good at using a spoon, but I guess sometimes she needs a counterbalance.

Ruby Tries This On For Size — March 14, 2010 at 4 pm

We were visiting our new neighbor friends and Ruby discovered their dress-up chest which held, among other treasures, various princess and Star Wats costumes, a ninja turtle costume, and this gorilla costume.

Helping Hands — March 15, 2010

I recycled this yarn from a second-hand sweater, and the kids were helping me swift it up. More fun than you’d think! We were making quite small skeins (I don’t know why) and they happened to be just big enough to fit around a kid’s head. So the kids ran around with funny headdresses for a while. The yarn was all curly, of course, and later that night I washed it and hung it up to dry. The next morning, Ruby came running to me and said “Mama! I didn’t believe you, but those head things are straight now!” A miracle!

Spring Planting — March 15-30, 2010

C and I planted a bunch of seeds early this year, to get a jump start in the garden. We planted summer squash, and another squash called “pumpa” (seeds weren’t ours, so I don’t even know what kind of squash that is supposed to be). We also planted many different kinds of cucumber, hoping to make some good pickles this year (and avoid paying $10 for a jar of regular dill pickles). We have Boston cucumbers, lemon cucumbers, and something called “Spacemaster Bush”. I don’t think I even need to make a joke about that.
