Sunny Day on Hovedøya — June 1, 2009

It was Andre Pinsedag, which means the day after Pentecost sunday, which is a holiday here. Because Norwegians will take any excuse for a three-day weekend. We (and about 5000 other people) packed up a picnic and piled into a boat headed for the islands. We chose to picnic in the meadow behind the cloister ruins on Hovedøya. The kids had a lot of fun exploring the ruins, running in the sunny meadow, and of course grilling pølse (hotdogs).

Geometric Toy — June 2, 2009

Wendy sent us another fun fun package for C’s birthday. Among C’s birthday gifts was this geomatric-tile toy. It was an immediate hit.

Ambitious Forest Picnic — June 3, 2009

While C was having his first visit at elementary school, I took Grandma Susie and the girls a few stops north on the train up into the forest. We walked through our regular paths in the forest and found a little spot in the blueberry bushes for our picnic. Unfortunately, the sun went away and it got pretty cold. The day after this, C’s class went on a forest hike and they reported that it snowed a little while they were there! I was not prepared for that…

C had his first visiting day at his new school today. We dropped him off and they did some activities with their designated older-kid-buddy and played on the playground. We picked him up three hours later, and it seemed like he had a lot of fun. Except for the 45 minute train ride out there, I think we are going to enjoy this elementary school experience.

When we visited Hovedøya Mom was wondering about some of the rocks and formations we found. So I thought it would be fun to go back to the natural history museums with her. (Yes, we’ve gone quite often lately!) C was a little less patient with actaully trying to read every exhibit, but we got through most of the local geology section and satisfied Mom’s curiosity before heading up to see the dinosaurs.

The Bow-Shirt Brigade — Jun 5, 2009 at 2:59 pm

Ruby was so excited to wake up from her nap and see that Papa also has a bow on his shirt! (If you look closely, you can see that her shirt has a tiny pink bow on it.)

C’s 6th Birthday Party — June 6, 2009

We scheduled C’s birthday party for a few weeks after his actual birthday so that Grandma Susie could be there. I planned a picnic in the park and hoped for good weather (despite our history with C’s birthday parties being cold and/or rainy). The good weather came through, and C’s friends all came to enjoy grilling and cake at our favorite park.

Johannes’s mother, a fellow knitter, knit these little baby mittens for Apl. The birds on them are Huggin and Munnin, Odin’s ravens. They were beautifully crafted; I especially love the pretty cord between them. Ruby loves them also — in fact, I had to hide them (until next winter) so she won’t stretch them out trying to wear them. :)

Me and Ruby took a trip to the park. We brought bubbles and a little airplane.
