Ruby brought this to me one evening, right after Apl was born, when Grandpa Randy was visiting. This was the ver first time she ever wrote her name, completely without any prompting or coaching from me (or from her school, trust me.) I felt so guilty that I hadn’t been working on this with her, or recognized earlier that she was ready for this! Ah, well…

We all went to the local cafe with grandpa Randy, the day after he arrived (it was also about 20 hours before Apl was born.)

I gave myself a project this year: knit along with Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Knitter’s Almanac. The first project is an aran sweater, and it was a joy to knit. Especially since I had so much time sitting on my rear in January.

We had a check up at the clinic. We were on our way home, since I was in a very early stage of labor, and they thought I’d do better at home. I was back 12 hours later to check in. I couldn’t even button my huge coat anymore!

That Fateful Night — February 2, 2009 |

We arrived at the birth clinic at 3 am. Funny how it seems a lot of births happen at night… I guess that’s when mamas feel like nothing else is going on, and they can focus on the task at hand. The birth clinic was actually full this night, so we had lots of company :) We had to stay in the birthing suite the next day also because the hotel (recovery rooms) were full of new mamas and babies!

Apl Ina Trinette Pine was born at 7:46:57am on her due date, weighing 8 lbs 4 oz.

Apl was about 2 hours old in these pictures. As you can see, she was a totally normal squinchy baby, slowly gaining a more normal human coloring. This is very charming if it’s your own squinchy baby.
