Ruby’s Artwork from Early 2009 — January-July, 2009

Ruby is very into drawing, and moved the representative drawings sooner than C did. Here are early examples of people/faces, and her very first name-writing.

Happy New Year, Ruby! — January 1, 2009 at 12 am

Ruby was sleeping in our bed, since Grandma Susie was in her bed. We were still chatting when we went to bed after our new year’s celebrations, and we woke up Ruby, so Chris took a couple of pictures of her being cute. Yes, he’s been bringing his new camera to bed.

Out and About in the New Year — January 1, 2009

We were getting ready to embark on a big bedroom-reorganizing project, and Grandma Susie decided she just had to have coffee before such an endeavor. We’ve been coffeeless for the last 8 months :( so we all went out to find some coffee.

My Shadow — Jan 1, 2009 at 11:59 am

I like this one, though in retrospect I wish I had stopped it down some. (This is at f/1.4; I should have used f/4 or something.)

Next time. :)

Morning Light — Jan 1, 2009 at 12:25 pm

Well… this was actually around noon. But that’s as high as the sun gets this time of year.

Focal Planes — Jan 1, 2009 at 12:30 pm

Three shots of the same bush from the same position (roughly), but different focal distances.

New Year, New Camera, New Moustache — Jan 1, 2009 at 6:28 pm

A new year! I think 2008 was the first year that I was still having trouble remembering what year it was all the way into December. And now it’s 2009…

Guess what I got on New Year’s Eve, though? My new camera! 5Dmk2, and words just don’t describe how awesome it is. (Except those words kind of do.) With my new 35mm f/1.4, it’s a low-light monster.

Also new: I have been growing out a moustache for a month or so. C helped me pick out the style of pointy goatee (still working on it) and handle-bar moustache. It’s not done, but it does curl up on the ends… and it is almost as awesome as my camera. (And for someone who has always hated moustaches, that’s saying something. It’s a total moustache revelation.)

In a month or so, we’ll have a new baby. I’m ready, at least camera-wise.

Lots of pictures on the way, but I took 11 Gb of pics just yesterday… so there’s a bit of a backlog. (And I’m too excited taking pictures to spend any time developing/uploading/cataloging/etc.)

It’s Ruby. She’s sleeping.

ISO 25600 in a Pitch Black Room — Jan 3, 2009 at 6:14 am

I was inches from his face and couldn’t see a thing. The camera barely did, either — I pulled this thing FOUR FRICKIN STOPS!! But there it is: hand-held shot (½ sec exposure) in the dark, at ISO 25600.

(Having said that, when there’s actually, you know, visible light, the 5Dmk2 is totally usable at ISO 3200. Unbelievable.)

Visiting Aker Brygge — January 3, 2009

We pretty much stayed at home the whole time Grandma Susie was visiting, but I thought she might enjoy one day of slightly tourist-like activity. And there’s been something I’ve been meaning to do here for a long time: visit Den Norske Husfliden, a store for local craft and crafters. They have many beautiful projects, and best of all they sell the raw materials and not just products. I bought a bunch of norwegian yarn and buttons for mom’s Christmas cardigan and we oggled the fancy sweaters and traditional costumes. Then we walked through the harbor area and had lunch at good old Peppe’s.
