September Day — September 1, 2007 |
Johannes stopped by for dinner. Another lovely anniversary dinner for us. We had thai food with the usual sweet, sour, spicy, and bitter flavors that we highlighted in our wedding ceremony.

Picnic with Hammer — September 2, 2007 |
C’s been really in the hammering things for a long time. So we finally got him his own tool set. What were we thinking. Anyway, there was a pile of logs at my school so I suggested we take a picnic out and some nails and let him hammer to his heart’s content.

Awake At 4 am — September 6, 2007 |
In order to catch our 6 am flight, we had to wake the kids up at 3:30 and get them down to the airport bus by 4am. Craziness. They were really good natured about it. Mostly confused, really.

Visit to All Roads — September 7, 2007 |
Ruby and I spent Friday morning at All Roads. It was so nice to be back in the classroom and to be with Mercedes and Alicia. The community is really thriving and I felt lucky to be able to spend the morning with them. (Will someone just create transporter technology already, so I can work here and live in Oslo?!)

In Which We Descent Upon Mercedes’s House — September 8, 2007 |
When we arrived in Portland, it was the middle of the day and All Roads was still in session, so we drove around a bit rather than interrupt Mercedes’s working day. We visited a coffee shop, Trader Joe’s, and then the Reed Campus. The kids fell asleep in the car and we drove around a bit more. I think there was more coffee involved. Finally we arrived as the last few children were being picked up at All Roads. It was a joyful reunion. Then there was diarrhea. Everywhere. Travelling doesn’t agree with one little member of our family. Mercedes and I renewed our friendship by mopping and disinfecting her new classroom. (Really, M, I’m still so very sorry about that.) The next day was Friday and (after we woke up at 4 am and spent about 3 hours at Starbucks and driving around) Ruby and I spent the morning observing in one of the most beautiful classrooms ever. I love that place. It was so great to see Mercedes and Alicia in action again, and to acquaint myself with the other two new teachers. Chris took C to Powell’s while Ruby and I were at All Roads. We met Brent and Sally for lunch (Oasis Pizza taken back to their new condo). The day was ended with a lovely meal by Ben. Saturday morning dawned bright and way too early for us, though we were beginning to adjust to the jetlag. Good thing Starbucks opens at 5 am. Mercedes hosted a brunch for us, and it was so nice to see everyone in one place again. Kim made some really delish eggs benedict (a recent obsession of mine), and there were bagels and cream cheese and salmon and all other sorts of lovely things.

Dinner with Brent and Sally — September 9, 2007 |
We had to go to a Japanese restaurant at least once on our trip, so we invited Brent and Sally out to Brent’s favorite, Ichidai. We had a lot of fun, and boy-howdy a lot of good food.

Consolation Trip to the Zoo — September 10, 2007 |
C was very much looking forward to going to the Portland Children’s Museum, and we made a date with Orion and mama Sally (they’d never been there!). When we arrived, though, we were super bummed to see it was closed for renovations all week! Luckily it shares a parking lot with the zoo, so we were able to have a good time anyway. We brought a picnic and enjoyed a nice long sunny afternoon.

Dinner at Brent and Sally’s — September 10, 2007 |
We went to Brent and Sally’s again, and this time Brent was cooking! We had a loverly dinner, topped by an even more loverly plucot tart. (I think that’s the word — those plum/apricot hybrids). The company was of course delightful. And, again, the kids had so much fun with Sally. They are still talking about going to Sally’s house again. :)

Trip to a Mall — September 11, 2007 |
Chris took the kids to a mall while I was at the dentist. I was at the first dentist for most of the morning, then I went and picked them up and we all went to the 2nd (unplanned) dentist appointment. After the day of dental excitment we went to Kim’s house for dinner. We forgot to take any pictures, though!

Visit to the Hess Home — September 12, 2007 |
We made the journey out to Hillborough to visit Sally and Orion at home. What a journey it was! Road construction plus directional impairment meant our 20-minute drive became an hour and a half. We finally got there, though, and enjoyed a little lunch and a little sand-canoe playtime.
