Brewing Batch #4: Anise Stout — July 1, 2007 |
Chris’s officemate, Stanislav, brought over his newly arrived family (with their new arrival, Phillip, 3 months old), and we brewed our fourth batch of beer. We decided to go for another stout, and we were intrigued by the legends of a truly “beer” root beer. We don’t have sassafrass or sasparilla or wintergreen or any other the other ingredients only available in North America, so we went with one simple flavor addition: anise. Reminiscent of Virgil’s root beer (a fave), we thought this would be a good baby step towards true “beer” root-beer.

Day out to the Farm — July 2, 2007 |
We went on a little day-trip out (south, I think) to a place called Rosenheim with our family friends, Hallvord, Harumi, Alf-Eivind, and Eiri, and their cousin. First we visited some more of their family and we all went down to a nearby farm that welcomes visitors. We saw all sorts of animals, and C had a great time playing with the other boys. I thought it was nice for him to be in a Norwegian-speaking environment again, since the schools are on holiday and we don’t have a lot of Norwegian playmates. I also tried to speak some Norwegian with the family, but just ended up miming to the boys how to properly roast a marshmellow (they never did before!).

A trip to the Teknisk Museum — July 4, 2007 |
Way back in July we went to the Norsk Teknisk Museum with our family friend Hallvord and his son and his nephew. It was great fun, and I would recommend it for anyone with children visiting Oslo. I thought it was cooler than OMSI, but maybe I should give OMSI another chance.

One Cool Kitty — July 7, 2007 |

Mom sent this picture so long ago. I didn’t put it up until a year later, I’m not sure why. Squeak sure was a funny character.

Ruby’s Quilt, unfinished — July 7, 2007 |
Ruby chose the blue and yellow quilt. She couldn’t really articulate this until about 6 months after she chose this quilt, but she said that yellow is her favorite color. (For right now. These things change over time. :)

C’s Quilt, unfinished — July 7, 2007 |
by Grandma Susie — Mom sent us pictures so the kids could choose which quilt they wanted. This one was pink and green (I think mom assumed Ruby would pick this one, but C did.)

We made an apple pie to bring to Chris’s office mate’s family, who just moved here from Bulgaria. C had a great time with the apple corer/peeler/slicer.

There is a free bus to IKEA, which we usually take when we go out there.
