Artwork from Home — January, 2007

These are various drawings that I’ve saved around the house. Mostly they are C’s, one was a collaboration between Ruby and C, and one was Ruby’s. I think C is getting some interesting shapes and movements into his drawing these days. They are really into the markers that we got, though they are incredibly dangerous (speaking in terms of wall-saftey).

Jake sent along these pictures a little bit ago — I am only now getting around to putting them up. Thanks for sharing! Jake, please supply the proper dates/places/stories!

Mug shots for new visas — January 3, 2007

We had to go renew our visas, which required a passport photo taken within the last 6 months. Which, of course, meant it was a passport photo taken that very morning. If possible, I think C’s was even less flattering than mine. Ruby was a darling as always.

Chris and Ruby preparing to brew — Jan 6, 2007 at 11:21 am

Chris is reading How To Brew, which as been an incredibly concise, precise, and insightful resource for us. That guy knows his shit.

Making Beer: our third batch! — January 7, 2007

After a great deal of preparation, and delay, we started our third batch of beer. We decided to go for a wheat beer, and ordered the authentic Weihenstephan yeast from the oldest functioning brewery in the world, in Freising. We also ordered some actual wheat, and only discovered a few days before brewing that we wouldn’t be able to use it (due to complicated brewerly reasons using the words “mash” and “sparge”). We scrambled to find some replacement spray malt. With everything underway, it all went smoothly. I missed getting pictures of the last part of the brewing after cooling the wort, which included splitting the wort into two buckets, adding the fancy yeast and adding water to make a ton of beer. The next few days were tense, however, as the yeast was slow to start doing its thing. We eventually decided to add more yeast (of a different strain) to one of the buckets, as the yeast must have died during the long stay in the fridge during our vacation in Portugal. Sad sad.

Ruby chilling with her feet up — Jan 10, 2007 at 12:28 pm

I just walked into the room and found Ruby’d moved the chairs around like this and put her feet up.

Movie of Ruby Checking Email — Jan 13, 2007 at 10:13 am

Whenever Ruby wants to go into the front room (the most exciting room of the house, by all acounts) she says she wants to go check her email. When C was at the dentist, and she asked him if he brushed his teeth every day, he said “Yeah, and I check my email.” In this little movie, Ruby and C are at the computer trying to check their email.

Hmmm… another random movie as Sunday Picture. And it doesn’t even have all of us in it. I’m slipping. It was just one of those weeks, you know? It wizzed by, without me noticing. I know I must have hustled C and Ruby out the door, to school, hustled Ruby back, probably grocery shopped on the way home, did some stuff or cleaned at home, napped (ahhhhhhh), hustled Ruby off to pick up C at school, hustle home, cook dinner… lather, rinse, repeat. I went to norsk Tuesday but not Thursday. I’m slipping on that, too. Just hard to be motivated. I know I sound like an idiot! (Uh, when I’m speaking Norwegian, not when I’m complaining about not being able to. Well, maybe then, too.)

I guess the highlight of the week was game night. We played Belter with Johannes, Arne Martin and Christian. Everyone brought their own laptops to be able to use the Belter spreadsheets we found online. This game is utterly painful, and almost not playable, just using paper and pencil. It’s got some promise if you can use a computer to take care of the minutiae.

I knitted a robot for Brent and Sally this week, and mailed them a little package with gløgg.
