The 9 Year Sweater — November 1, 2006 at 9 pm |
I taught myself how to knit about 10 years ago, with some intervention along to way to correct my rather wacky technique and style. I started knitting this sweater 9 years ago, as a project to take on my big 2-month trip around Europe with Sally. I used moss stitch with a cable on the front, with a nice sport weight black wool. I never finished it. Over the years I worked on it here and there until about 3 years ago I discovered I was about one skein short. I had finished all but one half of one sleeve. Well, I recently had a knitting renaissance and decided I could put this wool to better use, and pulled the whole thing out. No kidding. I will reuse the yarn.

First Snow! — Nov 2, 2006 at 9:24 am |
Halloween saw the first snow here in Oslo! And it was a cold one. It has been as cold these last couple of days as it ever was last winter. We broke out all the winter gear, and it now takes us an extra ten minutes (or twenty) to get ready to go in the morning. It’s kind of a relief, though. I didn’t realize how much I was looking forward to it. I can’t wait till we get more and it sticks and piles up and we can get out the sleds.

Ander, doing Chris’s dirty work — Nov 2, 2006 at 10:25 am |
Chris had been pestering me to give him this pot to replant the cactus he has in his office (a parting gift from Tim Altman). I was resisting because this cute little plant planted itself there, I think a seed from our upstairs neighbors’ balcony boxes. I thought it was charming. Well, Chris must have bribed Ander with cat treats or something, because I found all the leaves chewed off and Ander sniffing it suspiciously.

Ruby’s Outfit — November 3, 2006 at 11 am |
Ruby chose her clothes today, and put most of them on by herself (or attempted to at least). She is wearing a shirt, a sweatshirt, leggings, socks, and a pair of C’s underwear over it all.

I lined everyone up after dinner and insisted we take our Sunday Picture — with mixed results! :)

C counts in Norwegian! — Nov 7, 2006 at 7:23 pm |
C has been saying Norwegian numbers for a few weeks now, and Ruby has actually picked up a few of the words, also (of course without any concept of counting or anything). C can say 1 to 10 (usually mixing up 9 ni and 10 ti), and Ruby says “fire (4), fem (5)!” and “åtte (8), ni (9), ti (10)!” This is a longish movie of C counting in Norewgian with a funny accent, and me trying but failing to get Ruby to say it also.

Ruby learns to tiptoe — Nov 8, 2006 at 12:54 pm |
I think it was Lauren who started tip-toeing with Ruby, or maybe Ruby started doing it on her own, I’m not sure. Anyway, we’ve all been tiptoeing around all week because it’s so cute to see her do it, too.
