So I think this is the picture that belongs on this page. At least, it seemed like it to me. Violet wrote: “Carl Scherman. This picture was taken somewhere in Oak Park” I guessed the date; Carl and Violet met around 1923, and in 1920 Carl was living with Kurt and Helen in Oak Park.

The date is just a guess. Also, I’ve seen other pictures like this around. Violet wrote: “To the right: On a picnic at Sinissippi Heights. Sister, Gussie, Carl, Wallie, and Mother is in the back” Then Jean re-labelled: “Aunt Sis, Gus, Dad, and Brother Walt.” That is indeed Frieda to the left, then Gus, Carl and Walter. Wilhelmina is in the back. The fourth brother, Kurt, is absent.

I guessed at the date — Violet seems to have cut her hair around 1923, so I thought that seemed like a good guess. She wrote “To the left: Myself, trying to play Harold’s mandolin”. May or may not be Harold of Aunt-Tess-and-Uncle-Harold.

Violet quipped: “You didn’t know I was twins. Neither did I. A double exposure.” I believe this is the same day as page 6 when she went horse back riding with Carl.

page 7 — 1923

There’s picture missing. Violet labelled it: “Ashtaw Camping Club Grounds Elaine Harvey, Mable Sherry, Tessie and myself”.

This is another in the series of the Schoenemans in the field next to the billboards. This seems to be summer time, and Walt is home. He didn’t muster into the Marines until 1925, when he was 22, but he must have moved out on his own before that. Anyway, Violet is in one of these, and she didn’t meet Carl until 1923. Carl isn’t in any of these, so he must have been the photographer.

These photos were separated in the album, and not labelled, but I think they clearly belong together. I wonder if the one was cut to get someone else (the boys’s father) out of the picture, or for artistic effect.

Helen sure had a sense of humor.

I guessed the date based on how old Frieda looks. Early teens? I guess she could be as old as 16 here. So many pictures from this time are taken outside, and so few inside. It’s interesting to see their pretty carpet, and the wall treatment, and that the sofa is only upholstered on the back and seat. Also, notice how many buttons Wilhelmina’s shoes have!

Wilhelmina — 1923

There was no date on this photo, of course. Wilhelmina looks to be in her 40’s or so.
